We renovated this 1 bedroom apartment, in an inner city suburb in Brisbane.
The very small footprint of the unit was a challenge. However, it did allow the creation of some novel planning in the apartment design.
Existing Apartment
At 36 square metres total floor area, use of space was critical to the design and did not allow for wasted spaces. The original unit was half taken up bedroom. The only access to the bathroom was through the bedroom and robe. This made it almost impossible to entertain guests comfortably. Both as they needed to walk through the bedroom to use the toilet. And because there was such a small living space.
Renovation Design
The renovation design for the apartment demolished most of the internal walls. It completely replanned the use of the space.
The design makes best use of it’s tiny footprint. It allows: comfortable entertaining with guests, making the most of the city views, and creating a raised bed platform (in the original kitchen space)
When closed, the minimum room for the Queen size bed disappears from the space. However, when it opens up, it sits as part of the larger living room with city views.
