We designed this modern home extension for clients. Perched high in the mountains behind the Gold Coast, this home is currently under construction.
The extension makes the most of the location, to enjoy uninterrupted views over local forests down the foothills, to Surfers Paradise and the ocean.
The design allows for a new modern extension on a very steep site, above an older pole frame home. That existing house had deteriorated with the help of termites, water leaks, and the relentless summer growth around the house.
The site was constrained with issues including bushfire, older on site sewerage, steep site for stability and access, and so on.
The design works with those constraints, and the existing house, to re-invent the owners lives on the site – to suit their current needs and lifestyles into the future.
While this is a modern home design, it does also address aspects of sustainability for the owners on the site. This includes achieving a design for life all on the one level over time as the owners age. It faces north, making the most of the winter sun while excluding much of the summer sun. It opens up to the north-east, catching the dominant cooling breezes, from the ocean.
Further, it connects to the existing house and allows it’s further enhancement over time. The works to date are stage 1 of a staged project which is planned to be completed as the clients need and budgets allow. This will provide a substantial home to allow an extended family with adult children to comfortably occupy the house with privacy, and space for all. This provides for a richer lifestyle for all occupants without sacrificing privacy. It allows better use of the land, and better connection to family.
