This unique home is currently under construction, by our clients.  It is a modern home design “in a shed”.  Though quite unlike typical industrial construction.

The owners approached us to assist with the development of the design.  We helped them evolve the design including with detailed review of the climatic performance, to improve the sustainability and comfort of the home.  We documented these ideas with the home to allow them to commence construction.

When finished the home will be a timber house inside a larger operable steel skin.  This steel skin peels back – opening up when weather allows and shutting down again when preferred.  This helps provide extensive outdoor living which can be used in different weather conditions.  It filters the heat of the baking summer sun, driving rains, westerly wind and provides privacy.  It provides for intimate lifestyle and views of the house, from within the house.  And opens for expansive views and frames postcard glimpses of the country surrounds.

The home is a combination of key factors:

    1. optimising the fit of the home to the lifestyle they wish to enjoy,
    2. understanding the benefits of sheltered outdoor living with a smaller protected “core” to the home.
    3. recognising, and designing for the reality of a changing climate.
    4. recognising their rural location with all it’s joys – but also the mosquitos, snakes and other wildlife which go with that.

The home is based on Design Concepts prepared for the owners by Donovan Hill Architects.

Photos will be updated once the construction is completed.
